Change in the Issuance of Payment Cards
20 December 2024We would like to inform you about the issuance of new bank cards by Dutch and European banks and how this impacts the payment options at TMC parking terminals.
Bank Cards
Most bank cards in the Netherlands currently use the Maestro brand. Other cards include V PAY, Debit Mastercard, and Visa Debit. Starting in the second half of 2022, Debit Mastercard and Visa Debit cards will also be issued in the Netherlands.
Mastercard and Visa have announced that, as of mid-2023, they will no longer issue Maestro and V PAY cards. From that point onward, only new debit cards under the Debit Mastercard and Visa Debit brands will be issued.
Increasing Use of Debit Mastercard and Visa Debit
Currently, payment at parking terminals that accept card payments is limited to Maestro or V PAY cards. However, as mentioned above, Debit Mastercard and Visa Debit cards will gradually replace these. In various European countries, Debit Mastercard and Visa Debit cards are already in circulation.
This means that parkers, for instance, from Belgium or Germany who use Debit Mastercard or Visa Debit cards, are currently unable to pay with their bank cards at TMC parking terminals. Instead, they must resort to cash or mobile parking apps.
Upgrading Parking Terminals
To ensure that parkers, both domestic and international, can pay using Debit Mastercard and Visa Debit cards in the future, we will upgrade our parking terminals. The correct card reader software will be installed and tested on terminals that accept card payments by a TMC technician. Municipalities do not need to take any action.
If your municipality has TMC parking terminals installed, one of our project managers will contact you to discuss the necessary updates.
